Goodbye summer
September 21st, 2025We step out of the exhibition room and begin to hear the noise, rain pours from the sky with a cruel intensity. It feels like the first autumn day is tearing summer apart.
A mix of umbrellas and colorful plastic ponchos are filling the space disclosed by the door of La Virreina Centre de la Imatge. It’s like witnessing a waltz of colorful ghosts floating in the darkness.
We decide to walk out and look for a cab. Rain is pouring every uncovered textile or piece of skin as we cross an empty Rambla. This is the pulsing heart of tourists, guiris, as they are addressed by the locals, and it’s falling silent in a way I’ve never seen before.
We struggle to find a cab. I run towards a few ones, only to be outpaced by other people or to see an index finger swinging from left to right, leaving me drenched with every try.
My gaze fogs behind the drops on my glasses when we finally slide into a free one. From the safety of this metal shelter, the words of Todd Hido come to mind. I had just finished reading him a few hours earlier. Going through his evolution on portraying landscapes, he describes the concept of intimate distance shooting through the windshield. A way to convey the feelings of how's to be on the other side of the glass from the distance of a car.
There, after some hesitation, I pull the camera out.
