The Constructed Street Photograph — 18–19 July
A two-day Barcelona workshop on light, layering and visual intention — for photographers who want to stop relying on luck and start building stronger street photographs. Led by Mattia Compagnucci and Nikolas Deco.
A different kind of workshop
This is not another generic workshop. It is designed for photographers who already go out and shoot, but feel that their best images still depend too much on luck.
Across two days in Barcelona we work on how to read the street, approach scenes, build complex compositions, use light with intention and create photographs with stronger visual structure. Short theory, then real practice — and plenty of feedback along the way.
Your instructors
The workshop is led by Mattia Compagnucci and Nikolas Deco, and runs as a small group of up to 10 people. Out in the street we split the group between the two of us and rotate, so everyone gets close attention and two different ways of seeing — more perspectives on your work and more eyes on you while you shoot.
Three core ideas
- Chiaroscuro: how to use hard light, deep shadows, silhouettes and illuminated subjects within the same frame.
- Layering: how to build dynamic street photographs with foreground, midground and background without turning the image into chaos.
- Subframing: how to use architecture, windows, shadows, doors and street elements to guide the viewer's eye.
Each topic includes a short theory session, practical exercises in the street and specific assignments designed to help you apply the concept immediately.
Beyond technique
Before and during the workshop, we look at your work to understand your visual tendencies, interests and blockers. The goal is not to impose a style, but to help you understand what you are looking for and how to move forward with more intention.
You will do several review sessions throughout the two days, individual feedback, and a follow-up session after the workshop. At the end you receive personalised guidelines: what to focus on next, which photographers to study, what habits to build and which visual problems to keep working on.
